Among the Detroit Publishing Company's many views of yachts, this glass negative stands out for its specific subject: the sloop *Independence* under way on her second leg on July 8, 1901. The record notes that the run was probably a trial for the America's Cup races that summer, when American defenders were tuning their boats against the British challenger. Yacht trials drew crowds of spectators and newspaper attention, and photographers like Detroit's company captured these sailing days as part of a wider commercial catalog of American scenery and events. The negative was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress with the rest of the collection.
