A steam yacht named *Edith* sits on the water off Belle Isle Park in this glass-plate view of the Detroit River. The island park, a public green space in the river just east of downtown, drew Detroiters to its shaded drives and waterfront, and the record suggests the scene may be part of a Detroit Boat Club yacht regatta, though that link is only a possibility. Steam yachts like this one were privately owned pleasure craft, and their presence shows how the river served as a summer playground for the city's wealthier families. The Detroit Publishing Company made large negatives like this one for its views of cities and landscapes across the country.
