Star Island, the largest of the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine, is the place this glass negative records, showing its boat landing and the wharf that served visitors arriving by water. The Isles of Shoals were a fishing and farming community for much of the nineteenth century, and by the 1890s they had become a summer retreat, with hotels and cottages drawing vacationers out from Portsmouth and other mainland towns. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch negative between about 1895 and 1910, sold views like this one to travelers and publishers who wanted images of American scenery and resorts.
