Few places in the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog show water as dramatically as the Ausable Chasm in northeastern New York, where the Ausable River has cut a narrow gorge through layers of sedimentary rock. In this glass-plate negative, a boat slips into the rapids at the chasm's mouth, with the walls rising around it. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, produced and sold photographs like this one from the 1890s into the early 1900s, turning scenic spots such as the Adirondack region into popular souvenir views and travel images. The 8 by 10 inch glass plate format gave these photographers the sharp detail that made their scenes so widely reproduced.
