Few structures at Fort Snelling have stood as long as this old block house, which dates to the fort's early years on the bluff where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet. The army began building the fort in the 1820s, and blockhouses like this one were meant to guard the walls and the approaches from the river. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country around 1900 to record American landmarks for postcards and travel publications. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative holds fine detail in the building's walls and surroundings.
