The Kittatinny House stands at the Delaware Water Gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, made around 1905, records a hotel that drew summer guests from Philadelphia and New York, who arrived by rail and carriage. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this to travelers and promoters, and the road in the picture reflects the early automobile age taking shape in resort country. The negative shows how resort hotels were presented to the public at the turn of the century.
