Upper Genesee Street in Utica, New York, is lined with substantial residences, and this view records them on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made around 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country in those years to document towns and streets, and its views show how middle- and upper-class neighborhoods looked at the turn of the century. Large plates like this one capture the architecture, lawns, and tree-lined frontages in fine detail, which makes them useful to historians of domestic building. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
