Genesee and Bleecker streets meet in the heart of Utica, the Mohawk Valley city whose downtown was built around commercial blocks like these. The glass negative was made between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, cities, and rail routes during those years. Its streetscapes of storefronts, signs, and pedestrians offer a close view of how a mid-sized Northeastern city did business in the early twentieth century. Viewers interested in urban life of that period will find the commercial street scene especially useful.
