Bleecker Street in Utica, New York, is captured here as a working commercial street, with storefronts and businesses lining the roadway. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns and cities from the 1890s into the 1920s, and this record dates it to between 1900 and 1915. Utica was then a manufacturing and trading center in the Mohawk Valley, so the scene offers a useful view of everyday urban life before the automobile reshaped downtown streets.
