Taken in Utica, New York, this view of the city's post office was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, a large format the Detroit Publishing Company used for its views of American towns and buildings in the early 1900s. The firm's 1906 catalog helps date the negative to the years just before that, and the company number on the plate places it within its broad survey of the country. Federal post offices of this era were often among the most substantial public buildings in a city of Utica's size, so the picture also records civic architecture and the street around it.
