Few institutions in upstate New York have a longer history than the State Hospital at Utica, which opened in 1843 as the state's first publicly funded asylum for the insane. Its first superintendent, Amariah Brigham, championed moral treatment, the idea that rest, routine, fresh air and purposeful work could help patients recover. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s, captured the building on a large 8 by 10 inch glass negative, offering a clear view of how the hospital presented itself around 1905.
