The record names the Vermont State House in Montpelier, the seat of the state legislature, so this view centers on a government building rather than a street or landscape. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many commercial views of American towns and landmarks in the early 1900s, produced this glass negative, and the date of about 1904 is an estimate. Its granite Greek Revival front, completed in the late 1850s after an earlier building was lost to fire, made the capitol a common subject for photographers touring New England. The negative's large 8 by 10 inch format gave the printers fine detail in the stonework and the surrounding grounds.
