Seneca Park sits on the high banks of the Genesee River gorge in Rochester, New York, and this view looks down the winding river from above the park's edge. Around 1904, the Detroit Publishing Company was building a large catalog of American scenery, much of it marketed to tourists and sold as souvenirs and postcards-style views. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the river's course through the city's wooded parkland, a setting that Rochester had begun to promote as a place for recreation. The negative later reached the State Historical Society of Colorado and was given to the Library of Congress in 1949.
