This view of the Toledo Public Library in Ohio was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, the large format the Detroit Publishing Company favored for its city and architectural views. The company, based in Detroit, sold such images to travelers, schools and businesses, and its catalogues helped circulate pictures of American towns in the early 1900s. The date of roughly 1900 to 1906 comes from the company's own 1906 catalog, which listed the view. Libraries of this period were often prominent civic buildings, and a photograph like this records how a public institution presented itself to the city.
