The Carnegie Library in Burlington, Vermont, was one of many public libraries financed by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who funded more than 1,600 across the United States and abroad in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American towns, landscapes, and landmarks, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, which the record dates to about 1907 with a question mark. Carnegie libraries were usually designed as civic showpieces, so photographers often framed them to emphasize their architecture and prominent setting. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
