Few resort hotels on the New Jersey shore have a clearer corner view than this one: the street signs for Atlantic and Oak Avenues are legible on the building itself, pinning the Hotel Seaside to a specific intersection in Wildwood. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, traveled widely to document American towns, resorts and scenery for commercial postcards and booklets. Wildwood grew quickly as a seaside destination in those years, drawing vacationers by rail to its beaches and boardwalk, so a hotel like this one captures the period when the town was building its tourism economy.
