Few American forts are ringed by a moat like the one at Fort Monroe, and this view of its deep ditch and grassy ramparts at Old Point Comfort, near Hampton, Virginia, shows the defensive design that set the fort apart. Construction began in 1819 on a large masonry work named for President James Monroe, and its moat and earthen banks were meant to slow an attacker long enough for guns on the walls to answer. Dated to about 1908, the picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company as part of its large collection of glass-plate negatives, and it records the fort while its coastal defense role was still active.
