From an elevated vantage point known as Reed's Tower, this view looks out over Fort Oglethorpe in northwest Georgia, with the Chickamauga battlefield close by. The Battle of Chickamauga, fought in September 1863, was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War, and the surrounding ground became Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in 1890, among the first such parks in the country. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photographs of American scenery and landmarks in the early 1900s, made this glass negative to record the wooded countryside that the armies had fought over.
