The vessel named in this glass dry plate negative, the S.S. James Reed, is identified by a title and a Detroit Publishing Company number, 022516, that place it within the firm's large catalog of American scenes. The plate, an 8 by 10 inch negative, carries a handwritten "118"" note, which may record a dimension of the ship or the print. Photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1900 and 1910 documented steamers, rail lines, and towns across the country, and their negatives were later used to make prints and photochrom views for sale to a broad public. The plate was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, which helps explain how such a commercial record came to rest in a western collection.
