Senator James McMillan's Grosse Pointe residence is captured here in a wide panoramic view, shot as two linked sections on large glass plate negatives. McMillan, a Detroit businessman, represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate for much of the 1890s, and the lakeside suburb of Grosse Pointe was a favored place for Detroit's prosperous families to build summer and year-round homes. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many such views of towns and estates around the country, produced this image, and its panoramic format shows how the house sat within its grounds.
