Grosse Isle, an island in the Detroit River south of the city, drew Detroit families seeking summer retreats in the late nineteenth century, and this picture shows one of the homes that stood on its shores during that resort era. The glass-plate negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, resorts and landscapes across the country around 1900 and sold the views to travelers and publishers. The image preserves how summer houses on the island looked when they were built more for leisure than for year-round farming.
