Rather than a view of a place, this is a photograph of a painting, a genre scene titled *Forester at Home* and signed by the German artist Ludwig Knaus. Knaus (1829–1910) worked in Düsseldorf and became known for sympathetic depictions of rural and domestic life, subjects that circulated widely in reproduction during his lifetime. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, recorded and sold images of art, travel and American scenery around the turn of the twentieth century, and this record dates the picture to somewhere between 1900 and 1912.
