Rather than a view taken on location, this is a photograph of a painting signed by John Henry Twachtman, the Cincinnati-born American Impressionist. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed artworks and scenes for publication, made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and the title and date come from a 1912 volume issued by Thistle Publications. Twachtman worked mostly in the landscapes of Connecticut and was one of the original Ten American Painters, a group known for soft light and loose, broken brushwork. A black-and-white reproduction can only partly convey those qualities, but it preserves the composition and the mood of a seasonal turning point.
