Rather than a fresh sitting, this 8 x 10 inch glass negative copies an existing portrait of Thomas A. Edison. The name of the original photographer has been obliterated, though a copyright symbol remains. Edison, known for the phonograph, the practical incandescent lamp and his work on motion pictures, was among the most photographed Americans of his day, and likenesses like this one were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, as part of the Detroit Publishing Company collection.
