The record describes a full-length portrait of a violinist, shown with the instrument, though the title was assigned by a cataloger, so the sitter and the painter are not named. This glass transparency is a photograph of a painting, and it was made sometime between 1900 and 1912 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for reproducing artworks and scenic views for wide sale. Such glass slides were often used for lantern-slide lectures on art and for teaching, which explains why many surviving examples show paintings rather than original scenes. The piece came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
