Trumbull is shown here as a half-length figure, but the picture is a color autochrome of an earlier painting, not a view of the man himself. The original portrait was made by Waldo and Jewett, the New York partnership of Samuel Lovett Waldo and William Jewett. Trumbull (1756-1843) served as an aide to George Washington during the Revolutionary War and later painted scenes such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which made his own likeness a familiar subject for other artists. The transparency is cracked down the middle, a reminder of how fragile early color glass plates were.
