The Hancock-Clarke House in Lexington, Massachusetts, was built by the Rev. John Hancock, grandfather of the future signer of the Declaration of Independence. His successor, the Rev. Jonas Clarke, hosted John Hancock and Samuel Adams there in April 1775, just before the battles of Lexington and Concord. This c1900 color photochrom from the Detroit Publishing Company shows the house's kitchen when it was attracting visitors interested in Revolutionary history. The photochrom process printed color from photographic originals, giving the hearth and worn furnishings a warmth that black-and-white views could not.
