Mary Ball Washington, George Washington's mother, lived in this Fredericksburg, Virginia, house from 1772 until her death in 1789, and it became a place of pilgrimage for visitors interested in the first president's family. This negative is a copy made from an earlier photographic print, so it records a view that circulated in the early twentieth century, when the Detroit Publishing Company sold landscape and historic-site pictures to travelers and schools. The house's association with Washington's upbringing and later memory made it one of the more popular views of the town, and the glass negative preserves how the building looked to visitors of that period.
