Thirteen maidens, each standing for one of the original states, circle George Washington at the center of this detail from the Capitol Rotunda ceiling. Italian-born painter Constantino Brumidi completed the fresco in 1865, part of a long campaign to decorate the building's interior. The Detroit Publishing Company's glass negative, made around 1904, records the work nearly forty years after it was painted, when the Rotunda had become a major stop for visitors to the capital. The image shows how Brumidi combined classical allegory with a national founding story.
