Washington's tomb stands on a grassy slope within the grounds of Mount Vernon, the Potomac River estate where he lived and died. He was first buried in a brick vault in December 1799, and the tomb shown here later replaced that original burial place. By around 1902, when this view was made, the estate had long drawn visitors and had been preserved by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association since 1858. The Detroit Publishing Company issued many travel views of American landmarks, so this one records the site as many visitors of the period would have seen it.
