The kitchen garden at Mount Vernon, the Virginia estate of George Washington, was once a working part of the plantation that supplied the household with vegetables and herbs. Washington kept detailed farm records and experimented with crops there, so the garden reflects the practical side of his life as a planter as much as the polished image of his home. This glass negative, made between 1900 and 1915, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views to tourists eager to see historic sites. By then the estate had been preserved by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which had opened it to visitors since the 1850s.
