Among the Detroit Publishing Company's views of George Washington's home, this one looks inward rather than at the grounds: it shows the main hall of Mount Vernon, the Potomac River estate in Virginia where Washington lived and died. The image survives as a pair of close variant glass negatives, a reminder that the company often made several exposures of a popular subject. Detroit Publishing's photographers, working in the decade or two before 1920, sold such views to tourists and publishers who wanted to bring the nation's historic houses into print. The staircase and hall interior were especially prized, since they conveyed the estate's colonial character to visitors who could not travel to Virginia.
