Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate on the Potomac, is the subject here, shown as a wide panoramic view of the mansion and its grounds. The image survives as a set of 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negatives from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of photochrome and photographic views of American landmarks in the early twentieth century. Washington's home had been preserved by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association since 1858, and by the years around 1900 it had become a popular pilgrimage site, which is why a commercial photographer would bother to document its grounds at this scale. The record notes that the panorama's sections are arranged out of sequence in the digital catalog, so the full view has to be pieced together from the individual plates.
