Cape Cottage, a seaside summer colony on the rocky coast of Cape Elizabeth just south of Portland, Maine, is the setting for this view of its casino and grounds. Resort casinos of the early 1900s were usually social clubhouses rather than gambling halls, where vacationing families gathered for dances, concerts, and meals. The Detroit Publishing Company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, sent photographers to document such resorts and sold the views as prints and postcards. Because the image was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, it holds far more fine detail than the smaller plates many photographers used at the time.
