The record preserves little beyond the vessel's name, but this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made around 1906, shows the S.S. Cape Cod as the Detroit Publishing Company saw it. The firm, founded by Detroit businessman William Livingstone, became one of the largest commercial photography operations in the country, selling views of steamboats, railways, and resort towns as postcards and prints. The negative is cracked across both sides, a reminder of how fragile these early glass plates were. The State Historical Society of Colorado gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949.
