The subject here is a single cabin rather than the vessel's deck or hull: Stateroom A aboard the steamer J.H. Sheadle, photographed around 1906. Passenger cabins like this one were a point of pride for steamboat companies, which marketed their furnishings and comfort to travelers who might never see the engine room. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, produced a large body of views of American travel and places in the early twentieth century. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, and its catalog number suggests it was one of many views in the company's series.
