The subject is the S.S. *La Gascogne*, a French transatlantic liner operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, which carried passengers between Le Havre and New York. This 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative is catalogued under Detroit Publishing Company number 022361, and its date is an attribution based on the style of the title and numbering, placing it somewhere between 1890 and 1900. Large-format glass plates like this one let the Detroit company produce detailed views of ships and harbors that were widely sold to travelers and collectors. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
