The S.S. *Teutonic* was a White Star Line ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and launched in 1889. She was among the first large transatlantic liners to use triple-expansion steam engines, and her speed and size made her a symbol of Britain's commercial and naval shipping strength at the end of the nineteenth century. Detroit Publishing Company photographers, working between the 1890s and the early 1900s, recorded many such ships at sea and in port, which made their views a valuable record of the era's steamship travel.
