Views of a steamboat's private quarters are far less common than pictures of decks, landings, or passenger rooms, which makes this photograph of the owners' cabin on the S.S. J.H. Sheadle worth a closer look. Owners' rooms were typically furnished more elaborately than passenger accommodations, so the picture likely shows the vessel's most finished interior. The image was made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for widely sold views of American places and travel. Its glass negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and came to the Library of Congress in 1949.
