The S.S. *La Bretagne* was a French transatlantic steamer of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, which ran passenger service between Le Havre and New York in the late 1880s and early 1890s, when European lines competed hard for speed and passengers. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views of ships, harbors, and travel destinations to tourists and collectors, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, dated roughly 1890 to 1895, fits that commercial work. Because the attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a signed record, the exact photographer is uncertain.
