The French liner *La Touraine* is recorded here in two glass negatives dated October 1, 1892. Built for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, she carried passengers and mail between Le Havre and New York, a route on which French, British and German lines competed for prestige as well as speed. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of ships, railroads and cities, catalogued the pair under a single number. The attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering, and the two negatives are close variants that show the same vessel from slightly different viewpoints.
