Few pictures in this collection show a working fishing schooner under sail, but this glass negative records the *Rose Dorothea* as winner of the Lipton Cup in the first Fishermen's Race on Massachusetts Bay. The contest pitted fishing vessels against one another in a test of speed and seamanship, and the cup, donated by the tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton, gave the event more prestige than an ordinary local competition. The record notes that the photograph may be the work of Nathaniel Livermore Stebbins, a photographer active in New England, and the plate was later catalogued by the Detroit Publishing Company.
