The subject here is the U.S. Revenue Cutter *Walter Q. Gresham*, a federal vessel that appears in this 1901 view of the America's Cup races, not a yacht. Government cutters were often assigned to regattas to watch the course and keep spectators and other craft out of the racing area. The 1901 series was a major event for American yachting, with the defender *Columbia* racing Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger *Shamrock II*. The image is a glass dry-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American places and events in the early twentieth century.
