Idler and Hildegarde are the two yachts named in this 1901 view of America's Cup racing, a season when the event drew wide public attention. The Cup was first contested in 1851 and became a long-running rivalry between American and British yacht syndicates, and in 1901 the American defender Columbia beat the British challenger Shamrock II. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery, cities and events for sale around the turn of the century.
