Shamrock II, Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger, is shown crossing the finish line just two seconds ahead of the defending yacht Columbia, a close finish in the 1901 America's Cup match off Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Columbia, designed by Nathanael Herreshoff, was the American defender, and the contest drew large crowds of spectators on the water and along the shore. This is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its photographs of American scenery and events around the turn of the century.
