Few yachts of the early twentieth century drew as much attention as Reliance, the sloop built by the Herreshoff yard in Rhode Island to defend the America's Cup in 1903. This view records her crossing the finish line on August 25, 1903, during her racing season off the New York coast. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for photographing American scenery, cities and events for sale as travel views. Glass plates like this one captured fine detail, which is why sailing scenes from the period still show rigging and water so clearly.
