Two of the most closely watched yachts of their day, the American defender *Reliance* and the British challenger *Shamrock III*, jockey for position in this August 1903 view. Their America's Cup match drew large crowds and newspaper coverage on both sides of the Atlantic, and the maneuvering before the gun could decide who held the advantage. The picture is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's glass-plate negatives, a commercial collection of American scenes made in the early twentieth century.
