Shamrock II, Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger for the America's Cup, appears here in the hours before a start in late September 1901. The Scottish-built yacht had crossed the Atlantic to race the New York Yacht Club's defender, Columbia, and the series that fall ended in an American sweep. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its wide range of views, made this exposure on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a large format that preserved fine detail in sails and rigging.
