The stern of the steamboat *Britannia* is the focus here, photographed in Wyandotte, Michigan, just before she was launched. Wyandotte sat on the Detroit River south of Detroit, and its shipyards turned out many steamboats and other vessels in the early 1900s. Shipbuilding photographs from this period often record a hull at the moment before it entered the water, when the full shape of the stern and the scaffolding around it were still visible. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views of Michigan and elsewhere documented towns, industry and river traffic at the turn of the twentieth century.
