The cavernous hold of the steamer William E. Corey, a Great Lakes freighter named for the steel magnate who headed U.S. Steel, is the subject here, photographed at South Chicago around 1905. The picture was made as a glass dry plate negative, a format that gave photographers of this era sharp detail, and it belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American landscapes, towns and industry for commercial sale. Freighters like the Corey carried iron ore and coal across the lakes, so the empty, ribbed space of the hold offers a rare look at the working machinery of the region's shipping trade.
